Maoist Insurgency in Nepal: the Challenge and the Response PDF Print Email

By: S. D. Muni

The Maoist insurgency is the product of Nepal's failed government and persisting under-development. This brief study shows that while the Maoists' violent methods for capturing power may not have the approval of dominant elites and international community, their political and socioeconomic agenda has considerable appeal for the poor and long-oppressed Nepalese masses.

After analyzing the seven years of insurgency, the study critically examines the responses of the Nepalese government and the international community, particularly the
US, the UK and China. The study also underlines that India may have to radically redefine its approach to the developments in Nepal in order to preserve and promote the Kingdom's peace and stability, as also in its own enlightened strategic interests.

This book concludes that the King's military methods will not be easily changed and that social order will have to be drastically transformed so as to accommodate popular aspirations unleashed by the Maoist movement.

A Sleeping Bag for Mr. Fox: a collection of flash fiction PDF Print Email
New Release

Call it micro fiction, postcard fiction, short story, sudden fiction or simply flashfiction- by its extreme brevity is fast gaining popularity these days.Meanwhile, to give the Nepali readers of English short stories a taste of Nepali type of flash fiction, seasoned story-teller Vinaya Kasajoo has come up with his collection of 25 flash fictions. Kasajoo is more popular as a shortstory writer for children. In fact if you give a bird’s eye view to some of the stories in the latter part of the present collection, you won’t debate hat they would appeal to every children’s palette. However, on a second reading, you will notice that events in those stories do not unfold the way it does in children’s story. A lion would reward the mouse for saving his life in a children’s story; a mouse is not honored so in Kasajoo,s, “Honoring a Mouse.” Here the fox intervenes to convince the animals that it is the lion that should be honored and not a sordid mouse. How he convinces the animals is left for the readers.
The 25 stories in this collection are supposed to expose” the quandary of democracy and development.” Kasajoo’s literary sensibility was highly disturbed by the 13 years long moist insurgency, which resulted in a colossal loss of human life and property. He is not even sure of the future road the country will embark upon on its quest for a republican state. His hopes doubts, uncertainties and illusions pertaining to this country have been well- portrayed in this collection. In kasajoo’s own words, this collection will help the English readers understand the predicament of this collection were written over a period of three decades, and originally published in some other periodicals and magazines. It is why they represent diverse mood and situations.

The price of the book is NRs 75.
