Eight student unions called off their transport strike after striking an agreement with the government today. After striking the deal, Pradip Poudel, president of the Nepal Students’ Union, said the government had agreed to make sure that students, Jana Andolan injured and disabled get 45 per cent discount on transport fares. Poudel said the government had agreed to take action against those transporters, who do not stick to government-fixed transport fares.
He said government-fixed fares would be pasted at all bus stops and public vehicles within 10 days.
Poudel said a mechanism would be put in place to control the misuse of students’ identity cards after reaching an agreement with stakeholders.
The government has also agreed to fix transport fares scientifically within a month. Up to now, transporters have been charging Rs 12 for a distance of 6 km. Students had been demanding that separate fares be fixed for 2 km, 4 km and 6 km.
The eight student unions had enforced a nationwide transport strike from yesterday after the eight-day ultimatum given to the government to meet their demands expired on Tuesday.
The student unions also demanded an end to the illegal syndicate system.
